Are you afraid to fail? you may think failure’s a sign of weakness or inferiority. you may be afraid of being wrong or looking stupid. because you’re afraid of what might happen you rarely take risks.

you make safe decisions inside your comfort zone because your comfort zone gives you confidence. but what happens when you rely solely on your comfort zone? well, you may be confident in your bubble, but that confidence is fragile and it’s limited. as soon as you leave your comfort zone your confidence disappears leaving you uncertain and afraid.

so how do you build confidence that lasts in and out of your comfort zone? how do you adapt to a risky situation even if you don’t know what you’re doing?

well to build unstoppable universal confidence you need to change your relationship with failure. you shouldn’t be afraid to make mistakes and you shouldn’t be afraid to admit when you’re wrong. there’s nothing weak or inferior about failure because failure helps you recognize your shortcomings and that recognition helps you grow personally and professionally. if you never admit that you’re wrong, you’ll never learn what’s right.

in the long run, these people develop strength ambition, and confidence. because they dared to walk the harder road. so the next time you’re making a difficult choice, just imagine those two roads.

one easy and one hard. one comfortable and one challenging and when it matters most ignore what’s comfortable and rise to the occasion.

self-expression is a fundamental piece of your inward and outward confidence by learning to express yourself you discover and empower your voice, your opinion, and your perspective. so give yourself a boost of confidence by daring to express yourself.

It’s pretty common to feel socially awkward at times. Making conversation with strangers, trying to mingle, or going on a first date can all be nerve-wracking! Learn how to keep your cool, make conversation, and be yourself when you’re out and about. So how we can stop being socially awkward ?

Here are 4 simple steps that you could follow to overcome social awkwardness.

1. Accepting The Inevitable

Awkwardness is a part of life. there’s just no way around it. no matter how confident driven or sociable you are, you’ll still run into your fair share of awkward moments.

You’ll accidentally miss a handshake. Oops, you’ll wave at someone who’s not waving at you, oh oh you’ll tell a joke that no one laughs at. these moments are uncomfortable and annoying but they’re inevitable.

Accepting that inevitability is your first step toward becoming less socially awkward. in other words, you can own your awkwardness to create less of it. yeah I know it sounds backward, but let me explain.

Most people aren’t socially awkward because they’re doing awkward things they just think they are. they’re hyper-aware of every potentially awkward thing they do. but it’s their reaction that makes people uncomfortable. Even if awkwardness is inevitable there are ways to turn a weird moment into a fun one.

Let’s say you’re telling a story about something dumb that you did at work. you get a few laughs but notice an extended silence afterward.

If you’re socially awkward you might assume the worst. you take this awkward silence as a sign that you have terrible social skills. Now you start to think you aren’t funny. you assume no one likes you. you blow these awkward moments so far out of proportion that you can never recover.

Because you’re scared of making things awkward again you decide to play it safe. you stop acting like yourself. your fear of awkwardness ends up ruining your chances of connecting with the people around you.

But social awkwardness isn’t some unique disease only you suffer from. no, it isn’t a strange feeling that no one has ever felt before. no decent person is going to dislike you for making things awkward. Because they’ve done the same thing plenty of times themselves.

Who hasn’t held the door open for someone who was too far away or heard their waiters say enjoy your meal and replied with thank you, you too.

these goofy moments often turn into funny stories, but only if you react the right way. 

Socially awkward people tend to make one of two mistakes when something uncomfortable happens. They are either under the act or overact.

Underacting is when you mute or muffle your personality. You don’t like yourself because you’re worried people won’t accept who you are. Instead, you stay quiet and self-contained. sure you won’t make the most memorable impression but at least you won’t make things weird. right? Wrong.

when you are under act everyone around you will feel like you don’t want to be there. even though you’re just trying to be cautious people will assume you’re annoyed, sad, or bored and that just makes things super awkward for everyone. 

On the flip side overacting is when you try to be something that you’re not, you might want people to think you’re cool likable, or outgoing. You cover up your real personality with a fake one thinking it will make you less awkward.

But that isn’t how it works, it isn’t hard to tell when someone’s putting on an act. People can and will see right through you. You’ll end up missing out on potential connections because you were too busy maintaining your mask.

So what should you do instead, instead of trying to avoid the awkwardness learn how to make the best of it.

One of the best ways to neutralize an awkward moment is to laugh at yourself. don’t try to play off your mistake like it didn’t happen. You shouldn’t be afraid to be a little self-deprecating.

you want to show people that you don’t mind messing up. That you’re okay with doing something dumb every once in a while and at the end of the day your best friends are the people you feel comfortable being awkward around.

2. Consistent Activity

Many socially awkward people spend way too much time in their heads. They overthink every word they say. they overanalyze every little thing people do. They go back and forth wondering if they’ve made a new friend or ruin everything. These mental gymnastics distract you from the most important part of being social. 

you may have a hard time connecting because you’re paying too much attention to yourself.

Say a new friend tells you a story about how they went hiking in the mountains. Were you listening or were you trying to think of something cool to say when they were done?

Often you’re trying so hard to control your awkwardness that you didn’t relate to the people around you. by telling you a personal story, this person was trying to connect with you. They attempted to invest in the relationship. Normally this is a perfect opportunity for you to do the same thing. if you’re too concentrated on yourself people will think you aren’t interested.

So how exactly do you show someone that you’re present? well, you start by getting off your phone.

Socially awkward people tend to use their phones like shields. Whenever they feel an uncomfortable moment coming on they hide behind texts or social media.

looking at your phone might seem like a great way to avoid that awkward silence. But it does more harm than good. Now I know this sounds obvious but countless people don’t realize how their phone is impacting their friendships.

The simple truth is it puts people off it makes them feel like you’re intentionally stepping away from the conversation. Why should they bother caring if you don’t?

people appreciate it when you fight through the awkward moments with them. It might be embarrassing but it’s one of the best ways to build stronger bonds.

Now that you’ve put your phone away show them that you’re present by finding ways to relate. If they say something you agree with telling them why, when they divulge an embarrassing story go ahead and spill one of your own.

Even if they say something you don’t understand you can relate by asking them for more information. There are tons of ways to show that you’re present, but they all revolve around one thing. Staying active in the conversation.

no matter how awkward you are, people need to know that you’re trying.

The spotlight effect if you’re socially awkward you might think people are paying more attention to you than they are. You might feel like you’re constantly under the spotlight when you look around the room. it seems like people scrutinizing everything you do. this is a common psychological phenomenon called the spotlight effect.

Since you’re used to overanalyzing yourself you assume everyone else is doing the same thing.

Imagine you spill a drink on your pants, you immediately decide you look ridiculous, so you spend the whole night going out of your way to cover it up. you try so hard to make sure no one sees, but 99% of the time no one would even notice. Even if they do they wouldn’t think twice about it. 

Every person has their own complicated life to worry about. Psychologists call this theory of mind, it’s our ability to attribute unique thoughts and beliefs to the billions of other people in the world. We learn this when we’re toddlers, but it’s incredibly easy to forget especially when we’re feeling insecure. 

The truth is everyone else is just as worried about being awkward, looking their best, and making a good impression.

You’re obsessing about your pants, the girl next to you might be paranoid about a rip in her sleeve. The guy in the corner might be hiding the mole on his arm.

My point is that no one worries about what you do as much as you do. So don’t be scared to make connections and be yourself. Live your life like no one’s watching because most of the time no one is. 

4. Social Tag-Teaming

Even if you feel more comfortable being social, it’s hard to meet new people to practice with. Now in theory starting up a conversation should be simple. You walk up to say hi and ask how their nights going and boom you’ve got a conversation.

But in reality, it’s never that easy, is it? you may know how to hold a conversation, but that doesn’t mean you’re an expert at starting them.

This is where an outgoing teammate comes in handy. You want to bring along someone who can smooth over that initial rough patch, let them handle the awkward introductions. while you slip in once the conversation gets interesting.

The trick is to find one thing to latch on to, you might chime in with a funny ending to your friend’s story or maybe you ask the other person a question about something they said.

Not only is that a natural entrance, but it also gives people something to relate to right off the bat.

Hey, don’t worry about inserting yourself where you don’t belong. using a teammate essentially gives you an excuse to enter any conversation they do.

Just make sure you’re not hiding in their shadow. it’s easy to let a more outgoing friend do all the talking but what does that accomplish? they’ll be making new friends while you’re just along for the ride.

So make sure you’re always involved in the conversation, your friend might be handling most of the small talk. But you can still make an impression as an individual.

Look for ways to specifically connect with other people besides your friend. for example, if someone shares one of your interests go ahead and tell them that you’re passionate about the same thing.

This makes you relatable and memorable outside of your friend.

Now, of course, you won’t need your teammate forever, this technique is great to learn with but eventually, you should tackle the introduction on your own. But don’t worry the more you do it the easier it gets. Once you’ve talked to enough people you’ll realize they aren’t nearly as scary as they seem.

Self-control, in the definition, is your ability to manage your behavior to achieve your goals, improve positive outcomes, and avoid negative consequences. We highly believe most successful people achieve their goals through self-control and other commitments, So do you want to know 7 secrets of mastering self-control? let’s see what they are,

1. Manual Habits

Forming good habits is a grueling process. if you’re trying to exercise regularly, well there will be times when you want to skip the gym and just eat junk food. You’ll find that you’re especially vulnerable to temptation within the first two months for a lasting habit to form.

It normally takes about 66 days of hard work. This window gives your body and brain the time to get accustomed to new behaviors as long as you’re consistent. New habits will start to feel unconscious and automatic by the end but before that happens. You have to survive any new habits or growing pains you can’t cut yourself too much slack.

You can’t let yourself cheat or talk yourself out of it we’ve all had lazy days where these terrible judgment calls seemed like a great idea. But they never are so what can you do to make this process easier.

Well, the simple answer is to sit grit your teeth and try your best to smile through the pain. This arduous process is an essential part of habit formation your body will resist your old habits will lead you astray it won’t always feel fun or natural. But you have to keep pushing the more consistent you are the faster your habits will form.

2. Daily Monitoring

No matter what you’re trying to accomplish monitoring your behavior is a great way to keep yourself on the right path think of it, Like a to-do list. doesn’t it feel great to look back and see all your goals crossed out monitoring works the same way, but instead of crossing things off you’re filling them, this gives you the opportunity to physically see your progress happening calorie counters are probably.

The most popular example of monitoring these programs lets you keep track of the total calories that you consume each day. If you’re making progress these low totals will leave you feeling happy and confident. You’ll be even more motivated to find the same success day after. on the other hand, if you’re not making progress, monitoring reminds you of what you’re doing wrong. It’s easy to simply ignore a bad habit out of sight out of mind right but when it’s laid out on paper you can’t pretend. It didn’t happen daily monitoring ensures that those mess-ups don’t just slip through the cracks.

3. Managing Anticipation

Managing anticipation why is it so hard to resist buying the next big thing. How do you stop yourself from doing things, you know you shouldn’t we struggle to control vices like overspending. Because of something psychologists call anticipatory joy imagines you see a commercial for the next generation phone, oh you love all the new features and suddenly start imagining what your life would be like. Like if you had one you can finally take amazing pictures as you see online. You could organize your whole life with a touch of a button you subconsciously imagine extravagant vacations memorable experiences and lasting friendships.

You get so excited about the limitless possibilities that you forget one important thing. It’s just a foam anticipatory joy is a trick your brain plays on itself. When you want something your brain doesn’t always think rationally the idea of improving your life stimulates the release of feel-good hormones. They reward anticipation and emotion but make it harder for you to think through your decisions.

So once you start imagining happiness your brain, blindly fills in the gaps with friendship and fun most of the time you’re not actually excited about whatever it is. You want to buy you’re excited about the lifestyle you imagine comes with it. So what happens after you buy the phone obviously your life, doesn’t suddenly change you might find yourself feeling disappointed.

You got so excited about that perfect mental image, but now that you’re here. You realize how unrealistic your expectations were you might feel frustration or regrets. So you search for something else to make you happy before you know it you’re trapped in the same deceptive vortex of anticipation and disappointment to clarify anticipatory joy affects more than just your spending habits.

You get the same feeling when you ditch work to go to a concert or take a random road trip thinking. It’ll be some life-changing journey your emotions convince you that it’s worth it to be reckless and out of control. They sell you a vision of your future that unfortunately will never come true.

If you let your expectations get the best of you you’ll end up jumping from one letdown to the next so how do you keep your imagination under control anticipatory, joy isn’t actually a bad thing you’re just aiming it the wrong way instead of getting excited about the material things you won’t concentrate on the person you want to start anticipating. What your life will look like when you accomplish your goals that way you’re excited about something that will actually make you happy.

4. Patterned Living

Patterned living to master self-control, you need to look at your habits a little differently less discipline. People tend to use an active mindset in other words they view their individual actions as isolated incidents. Let’s say you’re trying to be more productive.

You might think there’s nothing wrong with procrastinating one time but it’s never just once is it. Whether you realize it or not cheating tonight encourages, you to cheat tomorrow you’re rewarding your brain for breaking the rules.

So by giving yourself a free pass, you’re letting those bad habits sneak back, this is why people with more self-discipline. Use a pattern mindset imagine each action as one little part of a huge line of dominoes, knocking just one down would mean you’re ruining the whole thing.

While habit formation isn’t quite as dramatic everything you do good or bad is connected somehow the simple truth is stronger patterns make stronger people.

5. Calculated Distractions

Calculated distractions self-control isn’t about removing all distractions from your life. Having no distractions can be as bad as having too many there are very few people in the world. That can actually live that kind of lifestyle even though some distractions destroy productivity. Others can play an important role they relieve stress and giving you a chance to recharge a distraction.

May even inspire you or help you see things differently breaks and distractions will build your self-control by avoiding frustration and fatigue. But there’s a right and a wrong way to get distracted let’s start with the wrong way distractions are meant to be short and sweet. They shouldn’t take up hours of your time or create more stress than they take away the point is to give your mind a quick breather, not to take it out of the game entirely a calculated.

Distraction should bring you a short burst of happiness. Its main job is to improve your mood and refresh your mind that’s why music crafts and snacks are three of the best ways to distract your brain. Music lifts your spirits and motivates you to keep pushing crafts like drawing and journaling give your brain some much-needed.

Creative freedom finally snacks give you a boost of energy and they just taste good like any muscle in your body your brain can’t perform without a little rest and relaxation. So use these calculated distractions to make sure you’re recharging the right way.

6. Voiding Temptations

Voiding temptations and distractions serve another valuable purpose for people learning self-control. When you imagine a distraction you probably think of watching TV or browsing social media. There are time wasters you do instead of doing something more productive but this isn’t the only type of distraction out there a study from Columbia University found.

What distractions could be powerful tools to keep you from making mistakes in this famous study researchers. Gave marshmallows to a group of four-year-olds to test their self-control. They told each child not to eat the marshmallow no matter how badly they wanted to as you might have guessed.

Plenty of the kids didn’t listen but the ones who did stay disciplined by distracting themselves. They sang or played games to get the marshmallow off their mind and you know what it worked you can do the same thing to avoid falling back into bad habits. Whether it’s cheating on your diet or spending too much money distractions can stop you from giving to temptation every time you feel like breaking and force your brain to think about something new.

But don’t just stare at your phone or binge another show on Netflix you need distractors that make you feel fulfilled and motivated. You can read a book listen to a podcast or just go do some chores the point is to associate self-control with something that makes you feel better about yourself.

When you do hit a rough patch this is an easy and effective way to get through without sacrificing the progress you’ve made as time goes on. You’ll need to distract yourself less and less eventually those bad habits won’t even cross your mind.

7. Productive forgiveness

Productive forgiveness we’ve talked a lot about preventing mess-ups and avoiding temptations. But sometimes we just make bad decisions you might skip daybreak your diet or slip back into old habits.

So what do you do then you start by forgiving yourself, one mistake can hurt your progress. But it doesn’t mean you can’t come back. You shouldn’t fall into a downward spiral and throw away all of your hard work. Even if you take one step backward you can always start moving forward again the longer you wait to confront your mistakes.

The harder it is to recover from them forgive yourself right away without letting yourself. Off the hook your mistakes can be incredibly motivating, but only if you make an effort to learn from them.
